Marion G. Romney was born in northern Mexico in 1897, fled to the United States during the Madero revolution at the age of 15, and a year later arrived in Oakley, Idaho. He worked as a farmhand, carpenter and manual laborer before enrolling at the Ricks Academy where he thrived both as a scholar and athlete. In 1920, inspired by a sermon given by the Apostle Melvin J. Ballard, he determined to serve a mission. Upon his return from the Australian mission in 1923, he married Ida Jensen, attended law school at the University of Utah, and began the practice of law. In 1941 he was called as an Assistant to the Twelve Apostles and spent the next 47 years as a General Authority. He was called as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1951, the second counselor to President Harold B. Lee in 1972, the first counselor to President Spencer W. Kimball in 1982, and President of the Quorum of the Twelve from 1985 until his death in 1988.
